Shilpakala Academy was established at Segunbagicha, Dhaka in 1974 by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Govt.
The activities of the Academy include patronizing and helping artists, sanctioning grants to Government-approved cultural institutions and organisations, conducting research on traditional heritage and culture, arranging art exhibitions and organising festivals of music and drama at national and international levels.
This is not an "academy" in the sense of a educational institution.

The terms of Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy, Karnataka Sahitya Academy, Karnataka Nataka Academy, Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Academy, Karnataka Urdu Academy, Karnataka Sangeetha and Nrithya Academy and Karnataka Lalithakala Academy had expired in June 2004, but the Government had not reconstituted them, the sources said.
The term of the Karnataka Konkani Academy would end in October 2004 and term of the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy would end on December 11, 2004.
Sources wondered whether the Government was considering the term of the Tulu academy as expired along with other academies though its term would expire in December.

The Shilpakala Academy has been limping for nearly a decade as it cannot bear the burden of 43 overaged performers, reports BSS.
The academy has been organising all its cultural functions both at home and abroad by hiring young performers as the permanent artistes cannot participate in those due to their inability because of old age.
According to the sources, the Performing Arts Academy, which was established by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, was merged with the Shilpakala Academy in 1983.

The Karnataka Shilpakala Academy on Sunday presented awards for the year 2000 to five sculptors, Mr.
Kashinath speaking on behalf of the awardees said that tourists came to India primarily to see the works of many sculptors, be it at Belur, Halebid, Hampi etc. The Government needed to support sculptors, he said.
C.Parameshwarachar, said that since the inception of the Academy five years ago it was trying to help sculptors, but was not able to take up several programmes because of paucity of funds.

February 5: The Karnataka Shilpakala Academy on Sunday presented awards for the year 2000 to five sculptors, Bheemarao Shankarappa Mayachari, K Kashinath, NS Maligacharya, Prof Nagesh Bheemrao Savannavarr and VA Deshpande.
The minister of state for Kannada and culture, Rani Satish, who gave away the awards, said that the government would try to enhance the budgetary allocation to the Academy so as to encourage sculptors.
The president of the Academy, C Parameshwarachar, said that since the inception of the Academy five years ago it was trying to help sculptors, but was not able to take up several programmes because of paucity of funds.
