Although the closed river was troublesome for travelers, the town of Shimada developed by this closed river, and this may be said as "the culture of the closed river".

Shimada is a city located in Shizuoka Prefecture of central Japan.
During the Edo Period (1600-1868), Shimada was a crossing point for the Oi River and was a prosperous post-station town on the Tokaido highway.
Because of its importance in cross-Japan travel, Shimada has been depicted in woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige and in poetry by Matsuo Basho, a 17th century poet who helped perfect the art of haiku.

The Faculty traces its beginning back to 1875 when Shizuoka Normal School was established in Shizuoka City.
In 1949, the school was merged with Shizuoka 2nd Normal School (Hamamatsu City), and Shizuoka Normal School for Youth (Shimada City) to create the Faculty of Education when Shizuoka University was established as one of the national universities under the new education system after the World War II.
At this time, the Faculty had three branch schools in Hamamatsu, Shimada, and Mishima Cities, but they were later merged into the Faculty.
