In 1597 Shimazu Yoshihiro, the lord of Satsuma, returned from the military campaigns in Korea with as many as 80 Korean potters in tow, seduced by the high respect held by his Tea teacher, Sen Rikyu, for Korean tea wares and by the prospect of building up a ceramic industry in his fief.
Around 1601, however, Yoshihirô had Kim He, the most praised Korean potter, build a kiln near his Chôsa Castle; on realising that his tea bowls were good but not his tea caddies (judging by the then prevailing criteria), Kim He was sent off for five years training in Seto.
He returned to his 'Uto' kiln but in 1608 Yoshihiro moved castle to Kajiki and Kim He opened a new kiln (‘Osato’) within its walls which operated 12 years till the daimyô's death.
