The original Shinbashi Station, opened on October 10, 1872, was built some way to the east of the modern-day structure and was known as 旰橋停車場 ( Shinbashi Teishajō).
Shinbashi is the original terminus of Japan's first stretch of railway, the Tōkaidō Main Line, and is one of Japan's oldest stations (the oldest station being Shinagawa, a few kilometres down the line).

Shimbashi and Manseibashi were marginalized when long-distance travel was consolidated after 1914 under one roof at Tokyo Central Station ; after the 1923 earthquake flattened both of the grand old terminals, neither was rebuilt to its former grandeur.
Until the construction of Tokyo Central Station in 1914, Shimbashi was Tokyo's most prominent rail terminal.
Ueno station was the more plain looking of the three main Tokyo terminals, and served as the terminus for travel to and from the rural northern and western coastal provinces along rails that followed the old Oshukaido and Nakasendo post roads.

Ask a young Tokyoite if they ever go to Shimbashi, and they may well reply: "Only to catch the Yurikamome train to Odaiba." Shimbashi is not a young person's entertainment town: it is a theme park for the rank-and-file businessmen whose children take the Yurikamome Line.
Beyond the New Shimbashi Building lies a maze of streets that have changed very little for years, and that offer very much the same range of goods and services.
And in front of the building, right outside the station, is a plaza that manages to stay well-populated with office workers right through office hours.

It normally works for me to use the maps inside the stations (on the walls) but, well, it sometimes doesn't work since I forget whatever was on the map....
It's really not a long way from Shimbashi to Ginza and even closer to where I work that it is to Ginza proper.
