CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Prefectural officials are upset that Marine helicopters and a transport plane will use a civilian airport on Shimoji Island for refueling on their way to and from a military exercise in the Philippines.
Last year the mayor of Hirara City on Miyako Island, about 180 miles south of Okinawa, objected to the use of the city’s community airport for refueling.
The previous year protests were filed when Marine helicopters landed on nearby Shimoji Island.

Akira Ishimine, mayor of Hirara, a small city on nearby Miyako Island, said he “had a growing sense of crisis that the use of the airport by the military this time is a part of their plan for future use of the airport on regular basis.”

I occasionally look for sites about Okinawa just for reminiscence sake and to see if I can find traces of anyone I knew while I was there, though there is little chance of that.

NAHA, Japan - About 1,000 people gathered Sunday for a rally on Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture to protest against a U.S. proposal to allow a civilian airfield on nearby Shimoji Island to be used by the U.S. Air Force and the Self-Defense Forces.
The rally participants gathered in Hirara, some 15 kilometers east of Shimoji airfield in the town of Irabu, and adopted a resolution demanding that use of the airfield be limited to civilian aircraft and that the Japanese government adhere to a 1971 accord with Okinawa to limit the airfield's use to such aircraft.
Koizumi made the remarks to reporters traveling with him after arriving in Vientiane to take part in meetings with the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and its partners.

I was recommended Miyako and Shimoji down in the south, but I'm afraid they are a bit far, adding extra costs and time because of the increased number of segments.
Basically I have been considering going to either Hokkaido or Okinawa, as I have only been to the Tokyo area before.
Or would it be doable and woth it?

was carried out within Shimoji Airport as in Typhoon Hunter 2001.
Luckily some of us had the foresight to get an early night while the others stayed up comparing traditions in different countries.
