The tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai, one of the most well-known and respected rabbis of the second century, is located on Mount Meron.
Rabbi Shimon answered, 'They build steps to put whores on them, baths to cultivate their bodies, and bridges to force us to pay tolls.' Judah ben Guerim repeated their remarks which eventually came to the attention of the Roman authorities who decreed: 'Judah praises our works for which he will be recompensed.

 The Obligation of Talmud Torah
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai is understood to be saying that the obligation to learn Torah is so great that it overrides the importance of earning a living for oneself.
Prior to receiving this message of rebuke from heaven Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai was of the opinion that it is forbidden for a man to engage in any other trade except for the learning of the Torah.
Yohai answered and said, 'All that they made they made for themselves; they built market-places, to set harlots in them; baths, to rejuvenate themselves; bridges, to levy tolls for them.' Now, Judah the son of proselytes went and related their talk, which reached the government.

Rav Shimon and his son escaped to a cave in Pekiin, where a fig tree and a well of water were miraculously created to provide their nourishment.
Rav Shimon bar Yohai’s lesson of Lag B’omer when he left the cave for the second time is especially poignant and pregnant with meaning today.
We must learn from Rav Shimon bar Yohai that the highest sanctity lies in entering an area of questionable status and working towards purifying it, in turning the “beginning of the sprouting of the redemption” into the complete redemption of a world of peace and harmony.

This is so despite the fact that the Gemara teaches that the plague that struck down the thousands of students of Rabbi Akiva - which is the reason for our mourning during this time - continued throughout the Omer period, from Pesach until Shavuot.
The somewhat technical-sounding reason for this is that Lag Ba-Omer (literally, “the 33rd day of the Omer”) is the anniversary of R. Shimon bar Yohai’s death - an occasion that was adopted as a special, holy day in the middle of the Omer period, and which ends the mourning customs traditionally observed until that day.
But the connection between Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai and the death of Rabbi Akiva’s disciples is not clear: why should it be this day that indicates the conclusion of our mourning for 24,000 Torah sages?

As a student of the spiritual leader of the revolt, bar Yochai was pursued relentlessly by the Romans.
The first time Rabbi Shimon came out of the cave, he was completely "out of tune" with the people of his generation.

Of interest to the affluent Sephardic elite of central and northern Spain was the writings of Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai, inheritor of the pre-kabbalistic prayer-writings of the sage Yohanan ben Zakkai (40-90 CE/AD) who composed sermons (1.) on the prophet Ezekiel's vision of the Chariot (Merkabah).
He would claim to be a descendant of Shimon bar Yohai and the true inheritor of the wisdom of Yahweh.
If Shimon bar Yohai did not exist, and was the only name he could give, he knew that it might not be a person, but a mythology for which he was the bridge and to which he would one day be linked.

Today we primarily celebrate the anniversary of the passing of Rabi Shimon bar Yohai, his hilulah – the public thanksgiving celebrations on the anniversary of his death.
The Hida (Rav Hayyim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806) writes that on Lag ba-Omer it was customary to hold a hilulah in commemoration of Rabi Shimon bar Yohai, yet then the Hida retracts this statement.
One of the Lithuanian sages, the ‘Shem Aryeh’ offers a reason that the Hassidim would certainly not like – we celebrate this day because Rabi Shimon bar Yohai was able to die a natural death, and had managed to avoid the evil clutches of the Romans who pursued him desiring to execute him.
