On June 26, 1278 (some sources say 1282), when he was fifty-seven, Nichiren Daishonin wrote this letter from Mount Minobu to Toki Jonin in Shimosa Province.
He served as a majordomo to Lord Chiba, the constable of Shimosa, but he is also said to have been an official of the military tribunal at Kamakura.
He is believed to have converted to the Daishonin's teaching when the latter went to Shimosa in 1254, and became one of his most steadfast followers, along with Ota Jomyo and Soya Kyoshin, who lived in the same area.

In 1660, in order to save citizens lives in case of fire, the Tokugawa shogunate ordered the building of a bridge across the river and the provision of squares at both ends of the bridge to act as firebreaks.
The bridge connected the two provinces of Musashi, west of the river, and Shimosa, east of the river, and was thus called Ryogoku Bridge, literally meaning 'two provinces bridge'.
Shown in this print is the third version of the bridge, constructed in 1839 and being 174 meters in length and 7 meters wide.

 Uesugi Kenshin
Finally, Kenshin was campaigning in faraway Shimosa Province only a MONTH after the supposedly bloody 'stalemate' of Kawanakajima.
Postulating a clear Uesugi victory does not seem at all unreasonable; the best the author of the Koyo Gunkan could say for the Takeda was that a draw had been achieved, despite mentioning that Shingen led a victory cheer after the battle.
In almost every year of the 1560’s (starting, as mentioned, almost immediatly after the 4th Battle of Kawanakajima), he raided the Hôjô’s lands and fought for various castles in Kôzuke, Musashi, and Shimosa - although without lasting effect.

This often provoked inter-province and occasionally inter-clan civil war, a common and oft-overlooked element of the Gempei War.
