		Shimotsu had first come to the United States as a teenager in 1904.
		In those days it was unusual for a Japanese woman to be unmarried at age 29, and it was even more unusual for her to have graduated from college and have a job.
		But Takako was an independent and adventurous individual, and she apparently admired those qualities in a man. She respected Uichi Shimotsu for his initiative in immigrating to the United States, attending college and starting a farm, so when he asked her to marry him, she accepted.

		We have investigated the effects of Shimotsu-to, a traditional Chinese herbal prescription (Kampo medicine), on ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced cell damage and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) release in cultured Swiss 3T3 cells to examine the anti-inflammatory mechanism of Shimotsu-to.
		The UV-radiation-induced cell damage and the stimulation of PGE2 release were significantly suppressed by the treatment with Shimotsu-to.
		These results suggest that the anti-inflammatory mechanism of Shimotsu-to against UV-irradiated erythema (acute skin inflammation) in guinea pigs in vivo may be mediated by the inhibition of PGE2 release from cutaneous target cells.

		The effect of a Kampo (traditional Chinese medicine) prescription, Shimotsu-to, on spatial cognitive deficits produced by scopolamine was examined using an eight-arm radial maze and a T-maze.
		Single doses of Shimotsu-to (0.5 and 1.0 g/kg, po) as well as physostigmine (0.15 and 0.3 mg/kg, ip) improved the SCOP (0.3 mg/kg)-induced performance deficits in a dose-dependent manner.
		Shimotsu-to administered for 1 week in drinking water (0.5 and 1.0 g/kg/day) also exhibited dose-dependent reversal of SCOP-induced impairments in the radial maze performance.
