Now the mayor of Shimukappu, Kannon has transformed this formerly unknown rural village on the island of Hokkaido into a vibrant resort town with a global perspective.
After graduating from school in Shimukappu, Kannon went to work in a Tokyo factory.
Eventually, Shimukappu was on the map as the faraway source of some of Japan's favorite delicacies.

Shimukappu's success was soon presented as a case study throughout the country, and Kannon was in demand to talk about the burgeoning resort's achievements.

The Aspen Sister Cities student exchange provides the opportunity for scores of middle school eighth graders to experience foreign cultures in three very different ski resorts each year.
Recently, three Aspen Middle School students from Snowmass Village — Brianna Mordkin, Claire Kornasiewicz and Nicholas Porcaro — spent October 12 —22 on Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, experiencing the differences and similarities of this Asian culture to their home in the Rocky Mountains.
The students stayed in three small neighboring towns, Choua, Tomamu and Shimukappu.

The tearful departure was the finale of a two-part student exchange program between the sister cities of Aspen and Shimukappu, Japan.
Lucks grew up in the Roaring Fork Valley and went on one of the first Sister City exchange programs to Shimukappu when he was an eighth grader at Aspen Middle School.
He was so taken with the place that he returned to teach English there after completing college and recently married a Japanese woman.

Cory spoke about Shimukappu combining with another town; they really want this program to continue.
His contract has been extended for another year and this will most likely be his last.

My friends Corey Lucks and Hideki from Aspen's Sister City Shimukappu came to the PGS Race in Furano to cheer me on.
I was hoping to advance to finals and give them a great show, but exited eary instead which gave me the opportunity to return with them to Shimukappu for lunch.
