		Shimura himself has described his approach as 'phenomenological': his interest is in finding new types of interesting behaviour in the theory of automorphic forms.
		The central 'Shimura variety' concept has been tamed (by application of Lie group and algebraic group theory, and the extraction of the concept 'parametrises interesting family of Hodge structures' by reference to the algebraic geometry theory of 'motives', which is still largely conjectural).

		In 1954 Goro Shimura was looking for a mathematical paper to help him with a particularly awkward calculation.
		The borrower was Yutaka Taniyama, Shimura wrote to Taniyama explaining how he was stuck on a particular calculation and asked when the book would be returned.
		However, Taniyama and Shimura suggested that modular forms and elliptical equations were in fact one and the same thing.

		The Theorem, proved indirectly through the proof of the Tanayama Shimura conjecture, is 200 pages long and involves extremely abstract and technical mathematics, mathematics that only a room full of mathematicians can understand and yet the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem made front page news.
		Clearly the public interest in it is not based on mathematics, but on the great story behind the proof.
