 Viewing Japanese Prints: Takumi Shinagawa
Takumi Shinagawa was a disciple of Kôshirô Onchi.
Shinagawa has said that the depth of color found in ukiyo-e prints fascinated him, which led to a special interest in the characteristics of color printed on paper and Shinagawa's mixing his own colors to achieve the desired effects.
Here Shinagawa has cleverly used the blue bands of color plus the grain pattern to suggest the bold face make-up called 'kumadori' ("taking the shadows") used in 'aragoto' ("rough stuff") plays first made popular by the Ichikawa family of actors in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

 Shinagawa Atre
But they've gone further than usual with the new Shinagawa Atre, which opened on March 3 - it's practically a mini theme park, with "New York City" as the theme.
It's deliberately a tourist's-eye-view of the city - the restaurant floor was created "in the image of an airport lounge or a hotel lobby," for some reason, and it includes a mock subway car right next to a mock newsstand displaying real copies of the NY Times.
If Shinagawa Atre were a hotel this would be the "lobby lounge," with candle-lit tables looking onto the main traffic corridor - definitely not the place for a discreet rendezvous.

I was also surprised to see the stark contrast of the old and the new in Shinagawa.
But right across the street from all the new stuff could be seen the old areas of Shinagawa, which was a mess of concrete, wires, flashing neon signs and narrow streets.
To me, during my travels in Tokyo, it seems as though most of the city is an ugly concrete sprawl with no real beauty, save for a few new places that are very beautiful and are like an aesthetic oasis in a desert of fading corrugated tin buildings.
