Topic: Shine (Mother Love Bone album)

  Pearl Jam
The band Mother Love Bone formed in 1988 out of the ashes of Green River, and immediately created a buzz among critics (see 1988 in music).
Mother Love Bone's EP, Shine (1989 in music) and the album, Apple (1990 in music) was released posthumously, and the band decided to discontinue the name.
And only their first album, when they had little clout, was released in the standard CD jewel case.

Wood (who was previously known as Landrew the Love Child as a member of another Seattle outfit, Malfunkshun) was the complete opposite of the prototypical Seattle frontman as he patterned his look and vocal style after such renowned frontmen as Freddie Mercury, Paul Stanley, and Marc Bolan.
But the sessions soon took on a life of their own and a full album's worth of tunes was recorded, issued as a self-titled release in 1991 under the name of Temple of the Dog (a phrase from one of Wood's lyrics).
In addition, the epic Mother Love Bone song "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns" was included on the hit soundtrack to the movie Singles the same year.

When other Seattle bands were releasing singles and EPs of hard garage grunge, Mother Love Bone had their sights set on the arenas, making a grandiose heavy metal that recalled Zeppelin and Aerosmith with a slight punk fervour; in a sense, the band was a response to Guns N' Roses' sleazy guitar boogie.

Before their mainstream success as "Pearl Jam", certain members had recorded successfully as Mother Love Bone and Temple of the Dog.
However, the issue of naming a band after the then NJ Nets point guard raised problems, and the band was renamed Pearl Jam (after Eddie's aunt Pearl and her special jam, which used peyote as an ingredient).
All totaled, they released more than 50 albums, most with two CDs, and set a record for most albums to debut in the Billboard top 200.

The OK Hotel, venue for the very first Mother Love Bone show, hosted a night of music filmed for the documentary; among the bands appearing were Macaw, a new project for Ben Shepherd, formerly of Soundgarden, and Devilhead, which features Andy's brothers Brian and Kevin Wood.

Mother Love Bone has become a legendary Seattle band, but its music is less familiar than its story.
Now, however, with the success of Pearl Jam, which includes Mother Love Bone alumni Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, and the slow climb of the Wood tribute album, ''Temple of the Dog,'' Mercury has made another attempt to find an audience for the original.
The tragedy of Wood's death is the only shadow that hangs over this album, for it is clear Mother Love Bone was still a young band with a great future when these songs were written.

This 12-song, 1976 album, actually a collection of demos from earlier in the decade, opens with the ultimate Boston driving anthem, "Roadrunner." In addition to its fun, straightforward guitar-and-keyboard songs, such as the anti-drug "She Cracked," the loopy "Pablo Picasso" and the rocking-secretary "Government Center," the album is notable for historical reasons.
