 Shine
Though "Shine" answers that question in somewhat facile ways, it has been so envelopingly directed by Scott Hicks, an Australian film maker with many television documentaries to his credit, that its emotional impact is powerful and real.
The film also takes comfort from the familiar, even fashionable truisms that it finds here: that genius brings suffering, that a child is a parent's passive victim, that adult life is chiefly the aftermath of early trauma.
Early in the film, the father is seen walking stiffly ahead of his son as they return from a piano competition; from this body language alone, David's sister can tell that her brother didn't win.

 Filmtracks: Shine (David Hirschfelder)
Shine: (David Hirschfelder) Among the red hot sensations of the 1997 awards season was Shine, an Australian film that caused such a stir at its Sundance debut in late 1996 that both New Line and Miramax were engaged in open warfare over the right to distribute the film worldwide.
A highly personal film, Shine details Helfgott's discovery as a musical genius and the conflict this caused with a demanding father who was attempting to live vicariously through his son's success.
The majority of running time in the film is occupied by the classical works, many of which the most difficult pieces in the world to play, and Helfgott's performances are often accompanied by a moderate orchestra.

The film won the Golden Bear (best film) at this year's Berlin Film Festival, startled critics at Sundance, and moved audiences to tears and ovations at last month's Galway Film Fleadh, where the film was picked up by major mover Buena Vista for European distribution.
Ultimately the film is about solidarity and discovering compassion, and he had those qualities ingrained in him.' The next day, the shoe-shine boys of Rio airport laid siege to Salles's production offices.
You should be open to encounters, and it's only the film it is because we found so many co-authors, or co-auteurs, along the way.' From the chaos of Central Station to a hypnotic candle-lit religious pilgrimage in the far north-east territories, Salles and his crew drew on the landscape and locals.

'Shine' like it does, film full of spirit
The relationship between David and his father is key to "Shine," and Armin Mueller-Stahl's performance is an impassioned portrait of an angry man who is denied the opportunity to fulfill his own musical prowess and takes out his frustration on his own son in the belief that it is in his best interest.
Noah Taylor ("Flirting") is also excellent as the teenage David, and he and Rush have managed to develop an impressive number of similar mannerisms in their attempt to create a seamless dual portrayal of the same character at different stages in his life.
It is a tribute to Helfgott and others like him, and it is a film that manages to elicit a genuine emotional response from its audience without playing down to it or enlisting the aid of any obvious dramatic ploys.

Shine, Review by Harvey R. Greenberg, M.D.
Hollywood has chiefly elected to film the biographies of tormented artists over their happier counterparts, presuming that boffo box office was more likely to be generated by the spectacle of Chopin coughing blood over gleaming keys or Van Gogh's demented self-surgery than by Mendelson's tediously contented life.
Shine's fragmented odyssey reveals that the pianist's mother and father were free-thinking Polish Jews who barely escaped the Holocaust.
Shine infers that Peter Helfgott usurped his wife's nurturing from early on, to form just such a pathologically intense symbiotic tie with his son.

In the opening scenes of "Shine", when we first meet the middle-aged David Helfgott (played by acclaimed Australian stage actor Geoffrey Rush), babbling to himself incessantly and wandering in the rain, he is in a state of transition.
"Shine" was one of the must-see films of 1996 and caused a bidding war at the Sundance Festival between Miramax Films and New Line Features (New Line eventually got the distribution rights), and upon viewing, it is apparent why this film caused such a stir.
The film's resolution seems incomplete, since it is not apparent that David has actually come to a sense of closure concerning his father.

 Shine - Movie Review
This is our loss and Australia's gain, because Shine comes off as one of the upper-echelon films of the year, an ambitious and unflinching look at that country's David Helfgott, a prodigy of a pianist driven insane by his father, only to emerge again after 20 years of institutionalization.
Extremely compelling for a film that is essentially a character study of one man, Shine succeeds by leaving out no detail and by masterfully using the camera to capture an inner turmoil that would be impossible for us to feel otherwise.
Shine isn't flawless, though -- the biggest problem is a serious defect in the sound quality, normally no big deal, but inexcusable in a film about music.

 Shine
The things which lift Shine above this are a trio of outstanding performances by Rush, Mueller-Stahl and Taylor, the way in which it explores the reasons behind David's breakdown, the seesaw relationship between David and his father, and the wonderful, heavenly music by some of the world's greatest composers.
However, as the film wears on David's behaviour, although consistently erratic, becomes familiar and, to a point, appealing as one gets used to listening to his rantings, some of which contain real comedy gems.

 1997 Pulitzer Prizes-CRITICISM, Works
"Shine," which opens in Washington on Christmas Day, was inspired by the story of David Helfgott, an Australian pianist now in his fifties.
Helfgott was "force-fed" by a particularly insensitive father, who pushed the boy to learn the "Rach Third" (as it is referred to throughout the film) at a point when he should properly have been working on his scales and some of the easier Chopin miniatures and Mozart piano sonatas.
He gave little laughs of recognition throughout the film, and he wept at the depiction of his relationship with his father.
