Shingu is a city of about 35,000, in the Wakayama Prefecture, on the southern east coast of Japan, on the main island of Honshu.
We stayed in Shingu from the 17th to the 27th, spending most of the days separately with our host families and a few days together on activities and tours with city officials.

SUZHOU, China (Kyodo) The area containing the holy grounds and a pilgrimage path in the Kii mountains straddling Mie, Nara and Wakayama prefectures was selected Thursday as a new World Heritage site by a U.N. committee, Japanese officials said.
Two shrine maidens at Kumano Hayatama Taisha shrine in Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture, perform a celebratory dance Thursday evening, with the holy grounds and a pilgrimage site in the area having been designated a World Heritage site.
The decision was made during the 28th session of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's World Heritage Committee that began Monday in Suzhou, China.
