RPGFan Reviews - Shining Force III
Shining Force 3 shows all the potential and power that the Saturn had to offer, but also reflects the failures of the Saturn system by only being the first disc in a series of three which encompass the entirety of Shining Force 3.
You must lead the Shining Force and light the way to the truth and vanquish the great evil that seeks to rise again.
I'm a huge Shining Force fan and I almost feel it would have been better for it to never be released than to get this unfinished game.

Shining Force series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shining in the Darkness; 1991, Sega Genesis (occasionally argued to not be part of the series, as it is a first-person dungeon-crawler RPG where the rest are third persons with elements of strategy.)
Shining the Holy Ark; 1997, Sega Saturn, Dungeon crawler, similar to Shining in the Darkness.
Shining Force III; 1998, Sega Saturn, has three separate scenario discs (only the first was ever released outside of Japan) and a bonus disc given away for free if you sent in a token from each of the three scenario discs.

Shining Soul, however, is the first Shining game not developed under the supervision of Hiroyuki Takahashi and Yasuhiro Taguchi, and their magic touch is desperately missed.
Shining Soul takes place a year after the events of the Genesis classic Shining in the Darkness, but the storyline is completely irrelevant to the action; you can play through the entire game without reading a single sentence of dialogue and not miss a thing.
Shining Soul doesn't even have the courtesy to bury its awful gameplay under flashy audiovisuals; the background graphics lack detail and movement, the two- and three-frame "animations" are pure NES, the music is mediocre, and the sound effects are few.

Shining Force 3 was one of the last Saturn games to be released here in the U.S., and what a way to end a system.
Shining Force 3 may be my favorite game of all time, but I am still frustrated by Sega of America's actions.
Although the cutscenes were in 3D, the camera angles, for the most part, remained similar to the angle used in Shining Force and Shining Force 2 with the enemy at a distance and your character up close in the right hand corner.

Shining Force III for Saturn Review - Saturn Shining Force III Review
It's been said before, and it'll have to be said again: Shining Force III is the kind of game that could've given Sega more of a chance had it not come out in the Saturn's beyond-final days.
The first of Shining Force III's three scenarios, however, is a surprising break from the developer's current rut, proving once again that a dying platform can still provide great games.
Shining Force III is a fairly long adventure and, true to the series, is rife with secret characters, weapons, and areas.

NTSC-uk Features > Shining Back: Reflections on Shining Force
By limiting the number of fighters one could use in the force, Sonic Co. encouraged players to use only their favourite characters and this made their survival a top priority for the player; another element that made Shining Force fun to play was the scripted battles.
By the time Shining Force III was released in America and Europe the western Saturn was on its last legs and the Dreamcast could be seen galloping in from the horizon.
Shining Soul staggeringly managed to contradict the story of every single game before it, Shining Soul II got the balance just right and was also a very good game, whilst Shining Tears seems to play well but has character designs that don’t always feel particularly “shiny”.
