The Video Game & Emulation Emporium (Arcade / Emulation)
Shinobi Z's project originally started off in 1996 as The Shinobi Arcade Emulator, which only emulated Sega's infamous 1987 side-scrolling arcade game of the same name.
The emphasis of the emulator is not game play or performance, but to be a virtual museum/educational archive of arcade hardware.
Most of these game types are represented here, from flying shooters, to four-player beat 'em ups, and of course, the quintessential one-on-one fighting game...

Strider, the first 8-Megabit cartridge ever, managed to very nearly carry a photo perfect replication of the arcade game, and only slipped slightly in the sound department due to the lack of voices in the cutscenes.
Strider for the Sega Genesis is better than the already great conversion of Ghouls N Ghosts on Genesis, and certainly better than Altered Beast or Golden Axe on Genesis, or the much later Street Fighter games on either 16-bit platform, in terms of being exactly like the arcade version.
When you compare Strider to the other action platformer carts of its day, in 1990, it's still the cream of the crop, the best there is. Only Shinobi 3 from three years later can compete with Strider in terms of gameplay and level design.

Shinobi for PlayStation 2 Review - PlayStation 2 Shinobi Review
Other than the fact that its main character is a ninja, Shinobi actually has very little in common with other games in the series, such as the original arcade game and the Sega Genesis classic, Revenge of Shinobi.
However, this Shinobi does have a thematic similarity to its predecessors, insofar as this is not a game involving stealth--you won't be spending any time sneaking in shadows here, but instead you'll be busy chopping up and chopping down droves of otherworldly foes.
And in the case of Shinobi, Sega's latest 3D action game, the main character, Hotsuma, has it even tougher than usual--he'll be constantly fighting off the demonic remains of his former clansmen.

Revenge of Shinobi was never an arcade game.
Even Shadow Dancer, another Shinobi title, is more sensitive to the gamer by naturally and progressively developing skill through repeated gameplay rather than losing just because you haven't memorized every enemy in every given location.
You've only got 3 continues to work your way through the eight stages with and this game is tough so be forewarned -- you'll probably return to the title screen more than a few times, especially on any difficulty setting aside from easy.

If I'm not mistaken the game has been granted the M-rating which means it could be a darker than usual Shinobi.

Kid Fenris: Missing Mascots: Alex Kidd
Miracle World was followed by the unorthodox adventure High-Tech World (really an altered version of the anime-based game Anmitsu Hime), a port of the earlier arcade game The Lost Stars, and a BMX title that, strangely enough, wasn’t released in America, even though it would have been some competition for Nintendo’s Excitebike.
Alex’s didn’t get a chance as a true mascot until 1990, when the Sega Master System II, a smaller and simpler revision of the original, was released with Miracle World as its built-in game.
It was a fun game, but it didn’t quite stick in one’s psyche.

When you consider the level of detail in REVENGE OF SHINOBI, you must also remember that the graphics _do not_ slow down when several things occur simultaneously on the screen, as is the case in RAMBO III.
