JS Online: Hello Kitty: Still the cat's meow
Hello Kitty turns 30 next month with her appeal just as broad as it was shortly after she was conceived as a simple inexpensive line of gifts created for Japan's Sanrio Co. by designer Shintaro Tsuji.
Hello Kitty is a pencil, a computer, a toaster.
Hello Kitty isn't talking - remember, no mouth - but her fans have plenty to say.

Amazon.com: Hello Kitty : The Remarkable Story of Sanrio and the Billion Dollar Feline Phenomenon: Books: Ken Belson,Brian Bremner
Hello Kitty, Sanrio Inc, Los Angeles, South Korea, Shintaro Tsuji, Mickey Mouse, Warner Brothers, Yuko Yamaguchi, Beanie Babies, Charles Schulz, Tokyo Foundation, Bruce Giuliano, University of Hawaii, Gift Gate, San Francisco, United Media, Tokyo Stock Exchange, Sharon Kinsella, Bill Hensley, Happy Meal, Hidetoshi Iwabuchi, Kazuhiro Manabe, Osamu Tezuka, Las Vegas, Sanrio Puroland
In one of the only books I've ever found attacking directly at the marketing and history of Sanrio without the usage of the cute Sanrio graphics, Belson and Bremmer give more than enough information about the roots of Sanrio, the lines, some of the reasoning for the purchasing, but miss in several other areas.
The authors do a good job of explaining a lot of the background regarding how Sanrio got to where it is today.
