The per-capita consumption of electricity in Shinyanga is one of the lowest in the Nation, notwithstanding its central-hub position in the grid.

From the start the Brothers in Shinyanga were given areas/deaneries to work in and be responsible for.

Kahama District is one of the six districts and, before its split, was the largest district in Shinyanga Region.
It is bordered in the north by Geita and Shinyanga Rural Districts, in the east by Nzega District, in the south by Tabora and Urambo Districts and in the west by the newly formed Bukombe District.
However, with the increasing migration of the Sukuma people from within and outside Shinyanga Region, livestock have become important in the district, and have increased substantially over the last 10 to 15 years.

In Shinyanga, the local Sukuma people, with the support of HASHI - the Shinyanga Soil Conservation Programme, have employed their traditional knowledge of regenerating Ngitili fodder reserves to restore over 250,000 ha of woodlands in the last 15 years.
While it is clear that large areas of Acacia woodlands have been restored on individual farmer's lands and on communal lands, it is less clear as to what the real and tangible benefits of such restoration has been in terms of household economies and livelihood benefits.
Based on a preliminary RRA (rapid rural appraisal) of several villages in the Shinyanga region, new evidence illustrates, in concrete terms, the positive linkages that exist between forest restoration and poverty reduction.

Together with regional and local authorities, the HASHI Team, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and the Ministry of Home Affairs, UNDP had planned to present the award in November last year, but due to a personal tragedy in our office it was not possible for me to make it.
I have also learned that through the project’s work, 70% of the people have been able to re-establish the “Ngitili”, a traditional system of land and forest management, which has led to improvements in food security, the environment more broadly and the natural regeneration of indigenous tree species more specifically.
In this respect, I wish to congratulate the Honorable Minister, the Honorable Regional Commissioner, District leaders, Community leader and the entire leadership in Shinyanga for supporting the HASHI Project team in their conservation endeavors.

The Water and Environmental Development Company, Shinyanga (WEDECO); Bugilo Water Users Association (BWUA); and the Kahama Mining Corporation Limited (KMCL).
Kahama Mining Corporation Limited (KMCL), owned by the Canadian firm Barrick Gold, operates an underground gold mine south of Lake Victoria in the Shinyanga Region of north-western Tanzania.
Since mining started in mid-2001, the mine has become the largest producer of gold in Tanzania.
