  Ship Money List
SHIP MONEY LIST KINGSBRIDGE HUNDRED 1635 This document is taken from an article which appeared in the newspaper "THE SWINDON Advertiser" on 7th and 14th November 1885.
In the County of Wilts the Tax was liked no better than ot was in Buckinghamshire, but the people appear to have done what they have done ever since - Namely, exercised the Englishman's privilege of paying and grumbling so that nothing more came of it.
The schedule from which we copy is an original document, in excellent preservation, and which has, we believe, remained in the possession of the descentants of those to whom it was originally addressed, and to whom we are indebted for the courtesy of being allowed to take a copy.

A tax of $3 per passenger is imposed on certain ship voyages, as explained later under Taxable situations.
The tax may be imposed even if a passenger does not make both an outward and a homeward passage as long as the voyage begins or ends in the United States.
The tax does not apply when a vessel is on a voyage of less than 12 hours between 2 points in the United States or if a vessel is owned or operated by a state or local government.

Cruise ship head tax good for tourism | Andrew Halcro for Alaska Governor in 2006
From exploration tax credits and streamlined permitting to fifty million dollars from the feds to market Alaska’s seafood, we’ve taken steps to develop these important economic engines.
Instead, we tax the Cruise lines (who ultimately pass this cost onto the passengers) and give it to a few select companys or cities in what I like to call business welfare.
Frankly the head tax should be done away with as well as the rental tax.

Customer Feedback on Alaska Cruise Ship Tax
Although this tax is only a small amount of the total for a cruise of that nature, it sets a precedent for other locations to attempt to raise additional revenues without having to offer any additional amenities or do anything extra at all.
I expect that as people hear about this 'cruise ship tax' there will be many more who will reconsider their cruise location, and go to other areas.

 Ship Money
In the past, whenever there were fears of a foreign invasion, kings were able to order coastal towns to provide ships or the money to build ships.
Whereas in the past Ship Money had been raised only when the kingdom had been threatened by war, it now became clear that Charles intended to ask for it every year.
The great business of providing money for ships, which used to be charged on the port towns and neighbouring shires, is too heavy for them alone, therefore the Council have cast up the whole charge of the fleet, and have divided it among all the counties.

As a refresher, Ballot Measure 2 (commonly referred to as the "cruise ship tax") involves an eight-page proposal with several controversial provisions -- many of which have been kicked around in the past, but only this year netted enough petition signatures to make it to the voting booths.
The Legalese: The initiative also allows for civil lawsuits to be filed against an owner or operator of a cruise ship, or against the Department of Environmental Conservation, for an alleged violation of any permit condition, provision of environmental statutes or performance of duties.

Cruise Ship Report -- Latest News About Cruise Ships
While the stiff head tax will mean higher fares for Alaska cruises, possibly putting a damper on passenger demand, and the environmental provisions are thought by many to be duplicative and unnecessary, neither of these are believed likely to lead cruise lines to retreat from the Alaska cruise market.
But the casino tax, and the requirement that cruise lines make public details of their business arrangements with land tour operators and local merchants, potentially raise much more troublesome issues for the major cruise companies.
The number of cruise ships sailing Alaskan itineraries has grown steadily in recent years, and they are expected to bring nearly one million visitors to Alaska this year making them the largest source of Alaska's tourists.

SitNews - Opinion/Letter: Cruise Ship Tax By Vic and Judi Vreeland
After reading about the narrowly passed cruise tax vote, we have to wonder what scare tactics were employed to coerce voters to implement yet another tax on visitors to Alaska.
This tax, like many others, will merely be passed on to the cruiser and would not affect the profits of the cruise line unless the cruise line cuts back on the number of cruises to Alaska.

David Malpass on Tax Reform on NRO Financial
Tax legislation has also passed in each of Bush’s first 4 years in office, with the president now enjoying a more solidified Republican majority in the Senate (55 seats, up from 51) to help push reform legislation through.
An extension of the lower tax rates provided in 2003, an expansion and aggregation of tax-preferred savings vehicles such as IRAs, Roth IRAs, 401(k)s, and 529 education accounts, and some relief from the ever-broadening alternative minimum tax should all be part of tax reform.
This presents a particular difficulty for a major tax reform, in that a primary goal of such a reform is to increase economic growth.

Freedom Ship - the City at Sea
The Freedom Ship has little in common with a conventional ship; it is actually nothing more than a big barge.
The bolt-up construction and the unusually large amount of steel incorporated into the ship meets the design engineer's requirements for stability and structural integrity and the cost engineers requirements of "economic feasibility" but the downside is a severe reduction in top speed, making the ship useless for any existing requirements.
For example, it would be too slow to be a cruise ship or a cargo ship.

Given that the judges were crown appointees, and that five of the 12 declared for Hampden, his defeat was a moral blow against Charles's government.

He said taxing cruise ships and tighten regulations is an example of an initiative whose sole purpose is to punish one industry.
