Hadlow is a small and pleasant village and parish, situated on the main road from Maidstone to Tonbridge, ten miles SW from the former and 4 NE from the latter town.
The locality and population of the foregoing parishes are as follows: they are all situated in the lathe of Aylesford.
Hadlow is in the lowey of Tonbridge, and at the last census had a population of 1,853 inhabitants; East Peckham, Twyford hundred, 2018; West Peckham and Mereworth, Littlefield hundred, the former 563, the latter 782; Capel and Tudeley, Washlington hundred, the former 399, the latter 575; Shipbourne, Wrotham hundred, 470 inhabitants.

It was in Shipbourne (pronounced Shibbun) that Christopher Smart, poet and friend of Dr Johnson, was born in 1722.
Smart was one of the sons of a steward of the Vane family and while he was in an asylum he wrote with charcoal on the walls the first lines of his much less famous poem, Song to David.
In about 1880, Edward Cazalet, owner of the extensive Fairlawne estate with is partly in Shipbourne and partly in neighbouring Plaxtol, gave the village it's heart - the present church, with it's huge gargoyles, the pub called The Chaser, and some cottages.
