Shiprock, located in northwestern New Mexico, is a most impressive example of a volcanic neck, or a central feeder pipe.
Shiprock is comprised of a form of magma known as volcanic breccia, pronounced "BRET-cha".
The magma of Shiprock is composed of an uncommon, highly potassic material referred to as "minette", or an orthoclase biotite lamprophyre, which is believed to result from extremely gradual melting of mantle rock.

Shiprock’s reading scores have jumped 1.9 grade levels overall, with the average gain showing a 3.8 grade level increase per student in their first year at SHS.

The Navajo word for Shiprock means "Rock With Wings." The Navajo name seems perfectly suited to this incredible geologic feature rising suddenly from the desert floor to a height of 1800 feet AGL over the Navajo Reservation.
The reason for this is that the town of Shiprock itself is quite small and did not appear to have any lodgings where pilots and crew could stay.
Each balloon is asked to provide a bag of groceries, including food staples such as flour, sugar, cooking oil, etc. If the balloon lands near any Navajo people, we were instructed to give the package to them and tell them it is for their grandparents.

The former Shiprock mill site is located on the southwest side of the San Juan River and adjacent to the town of Shiprock in San Juan County, New Mexico.
The Shiprock mill processed mainly uranium-vanadium ore from mines located in the Carrizo Mountains, Lukachukai Mountains, and Sanostee Wash areas in northeastern Apache County, Arizona, and adjacent San Juan County, New Mexico, all on Navajo Indian Reservation land.
The Shiprock mill also processed uranium ore from mining districts in western Colorado, after the Durango, Colorado, mill was closed in 1963.
