Royal Navy - Biocrawler definition:Royal Navy - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The first reformation and major expansion of the Navy Royal, as it was then known, occurred in the 16th Century during the reign of Henry VIII whose ships, Henri Grâce a Dieu ("Great Harry") and Mary Rose, engaged the French navy in the battle of the Solent in 1545.
In that time, the Royal Navy suffered only one major defeat - the battle of the Chesapeake against France in 1781 - and was able to defeat all challengers, as at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 where a combined Spanish and French fleet was decisively beaten (despite the British fleet being outnumbered).
In addition, the Royal Navy was involved in enforcing the ban on the slave trade and the suppression of piracy.

In Dutch, ships are given the prefix "Harer Majesteits" ("her majesty's", abbreviated as "Hr.Ms.") or "Zijner Majesteits" ("his majesty's", abbreviated "Zr.Ms.").
In English, the Dutch prefix is translated as "HNLMS" for "Her/His Netherland Majesty's Ship".

In that time, the Royal Navy suffered only one major defeat—the battle of the Chesapeake against France in 1781—and was able to defeat all challengers, as at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 where a combined French and Spanish fleet was decisively beaten by a smaller but more experienced British fleet under a brilliant commander.
The Royal Navy was also vital in guarding the sea lanes that enabled British forces to fight in remote parts of the world such as North Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Far East.
The Royal Navy is established under the royal prerogative, and the head of the Royal Navy, known as the Lord High Admiral, is the Queen (who is overall head of the UK Armed Forces).

In early May of 1981, the ship was dry-docked in Scheveningen, where a handful of volunteers cleaned the hull, and gave it a thorough checking over to give it a clean bill of health.
The ship's colour scheme was soon changed to a green hull and rainbow colours and a white dove of peace with an olive branch was painted on the bow.
In 1986, to prepare the ship for a long campaign in the Mediterranean, the midships food stores were changed into a chill room, a satellite communications system was purchased and the small mess room was converted into a campaign off ice with a computer.

The start of the world war in May 1940 caught the Dutch navy in the middle of reconstruction, as many modern ships were at the dockyard.
However, with the old ships in service, augmented by ships completed in the UK and ships taken over from the Royal Navy, the RNN played an important role in the early war years, when every man and ship available was most important to help turn the tide.
After March 1942, the Navy was able to take over several larger ships to augment her potential, but the numbers never replaced the war losses.
