  Australia Post Stamps -- AAT Antarctic Ships
In 2003 we mark the 50th anniversary of the Kista Dan — the first of four ‘Dan’ ships built by the Danish firm J Lauritzen for Arctic and Antarctic exploration and research.
The striking stamp images were produced from prints made from original linocuts by the illustrator, Peter Gouldthorpe, of Hobart.
The series shows different aspects of the ships and different phases of the ships’ voyages in the Southern Ocean, meeting the pack ice, in the ice and anchored.

Sailing ships were pictured on stamps of British Guiana in 1852 and Costa Rica in 1863, while a steamship appears on a Buenos Aires stamp of 1859.
Specific ships portrayed on stamps include the SS Lady McLeod of Trinidad in 1847, a paddle steamer of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company on a Peru stamp of 1857, the paddle steamer Washington on a New Brunswick stamp of 1860, and the SS Adriatic on a US stamp of 1869.
