The 680 was a testbed to examine the possibilities of introducing a lower profile, but wider two-man turret, installing the new Shipunov 2A42 30mm autocannon and a 7.62mm PKT machine gun barbette in place of the former squad commander position (who would move up into the turret).

 Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-30-1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Its current manufacturer is the Russian company Izhmash JSC.
Originally based on the 2A42 cannon for infantry fighting vehicle use, the GSh-30-1 is a single-barreled, gas-operated cannon weighing 46 kg (101.4 lb).
Unlike many postwar cannon, it is linear action, not a revolver cannon or Gatling gun, with the Russians feeling that the reduction in rate of fire is compensated by reduced mass and bulk.

This is a 30 mm (1.18 in), single-barrel, dual-feed cannon designed for use on light armored vehicles such as the BMP-2.
This is a derivative of the 2A42 for use on the new generation of Soviet (now Russian) attack helicopters such as the Ka-50
It is assumed that this variant retains the dual-feed mechanism of the 2A42, allowing it to carry magazines for both AP-T and HE-I rounds.

This round was introduced in the late 1970s and is used in the 2A42 cannon fixed to the BMP-2 and in movable mounts on Ka-50 and Mi-8 helicopters with double ammunition supply and a selective fire rate of 200 and 600rpm.
The 2A42 is a gas/recoil operated cannon weighting 115kg and measuring 3030mm in length.
HEI shells for the aircraft cannons use the shorter AG-30 nose fuze, all ammuniton types for the aircraft cannons have a shorter overall length, not to mix them up with the 2A42 types ammo which is not interchangable.

 Ka-50 Story: CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
The process of development of the helicopter design was closely correlated with the selection of the most efficient cannon and adoption of the appropriate technological solution for its mount installation on board the helicopter.
Eventually, a decision was made to install it in the mass centre sector starboard between the gearbox support spars which is the most rigid and strongest place in the fuselage.
The limitations imposed on the cannon azimuth deflection angle by such an arrangement were counterbalanced by the coaxial-rotor helicopter's ability to perform turns with the angular speed matching that of the mount turning speed of other cannon systems.
