Officials of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) have confirmed that the deaths of three horses in Shipyard, Orange Walk, were due to an outbreak of the Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis (VEE) disease, a disease that has caused some deaths in humans, though in extremely rare instances.
In 1996, five cases were reported in Orange Walk, Belize; and in October 2003, both the Cayo and Orange Walk Districts reported that horses were affected with VEE.
According to Gongora, 8 farms from the Shipyard area reported that their horses were affected.
