Sushi Dokoro Shirahama translates as “Sushi near the white sand beach,” which was accurate when Koji Kotani’s sushi restaurant was located in Del Mar, but it seems a tad inappropriate for the current Kearny Mesa location.
I heard about Sushi Dokoro Shirahama, known to regulars simply as Shirahama, from a friend who lived in Del Mar. He described the sushi as “mind-blowing” but warned that Kotani was somewhat anti-social—the reason for his re-location to Kearny Mesa from Del Mar, and the reason for selecting a tiny location.
Shirahama also offers dishes like teriyaki and sukiyaki, as well as appetizers, including a menu of daily specials featuring exotic fare like baked conch and monkfish liver.

Tokyo designers add politics to the fashion statement - Style - International Herald Tribune
TOKYO One of the first to kick off the 2007 Spring/Summer Tokyo Collections was Ritsuko Shirahama, whose works combined a fragile femininity (crocheted lace on demure knitwear) with political undertones (tank tops imprinted with photographs taken by the former supermodel Helena Christensen).
Shirahama said Christensen is "an ideal" for Japan's working women, having morphed from a fashion icon into a professional photographer, while having children and maintaining a home in between.
In a culture where women are finding it difficult to juggle the personal with the professional, Shirahama's message carried relevance - if not reality - and was a prelude for what was to come.
