"Hokkaido is also known as the home of the Ainu, a fast-disappearing people originally from Honshu who have been forced north into the mountains.
Hokkaido was fully colonised by the Japanese only in the 20th century.
There is a very small community of Ainu on Hokkaido Island who are physically very different from the Japanese, possibly descended from the earliest inhabitants of the islands.
