  RV - Nillumbik Reconciliation Group
The Nillumbik Reconciliation Group grew out of a 1997 decision by Nillumbik Shire Council to appoint an Advisory Committee to arrange an appropriate ceremony and venue with relevant Wurundjeri elders for the Shire to make a formal acknowledgment, apology and commitment on behalf of its citizens to the region's traditional owners.
Nillumbik Shire Council provides support through its Cultural Development Grants, consults the Group on a range of matters involving Indigenous history, and partners NRG in a number of events and activities.
Flag raisings, where the Aboriginal flag is raised alongside the Australian flag, are held at the Nillumbik Shire Offices, in parks and at local schools.

Nillumbik shire is a municipality north-east of Melbourne comprising outer suburbs, farmland and forest reserves.
Nillumbik shire was formed on 15 December, 1994, by the union of most of Eltham shire, most of Diamond Valley shire (except the urban parts south-west of Diamond Creek), part of Whittlesea city east of the Yan Yean reservoir, and part of Healesville shire (Christmas Hills area).
The balance of the shire's population was 8,638 (1996) and the total population of the shire was 54,417 (1996).

At the request of Mary McDonald on behalf of the Nillumbik Shire Rate Payers Association I undertook a one day inspection of the Nillumbik Shire and some surrounding areas to gain a qualitative assessment of the risk of bushfires and to comment upon the possible impact of the C12 overlay.
The major fuel areas are to the North and North west of the Shire are in the Yan Yean Catchment and the Kinglake National Park and outside the Shire in the State Forests to the North.
Photo 9 is a house on the northern boundary of the shire with a probability of survival close to zero.

Summary Information: The Nillumbik Shire Council Apology and Commitment to Aboriginal Reconciliation was the initiative of the Nillumbik Reconciliation Committee in consultation with Wurundjeri Elder Joy Murphy and with the support of the Nillumbik Shire staff and Councillors.
· Nillumbik Shire Council recognises that the Wurundjeri Willam clan of the Wurundjeri people and the Kulin Nation were the occupiers and traditional owners of the land that now comprises Nillumbik Shire prior to European settlement.
· Nillumbik Shire Council acknowledges the ongoing effects of such practices on the lives of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who continue to be disadvantaged by the effects of their displacement from their families, their land and traditional culture.

The Nillumbik Volunteering Expo was held in May 2004 to assist members of the regional network and local community groups in promoting their volunteering opportunities and recruiting new volunteers.
Nillumbik Council holds an annual Cocktail party with its neighbour, Banyule City Council, to celebrate and acknowledge the work of its volunteers and those working for the various community organisations in the region, as many community groups and organisations cannot afford to hold their own event.
