Yarra Ranges shire was formed on 15 December, 1994, by the union of Upper Yarra shire and most of Healesville, Lillydale and Sherbrooke shires.
The shire's area is about 2,500 square kilometres of which about three-quarters is public land, twenty-three percent is non-urban (farm) land and three percent is urban.
The urbanised south-west sector of the shire, reaching to the edges of Yarra Glen and Woori Yallock, had a population of 104,437 (80% of the shire's total), in 1996.

 $110,000 to Improve Yarra River Health Joint Media Release 24 July 2003
Up to 15 kilometres of the Yarra River will be rehabilitated and protected with the help of $110,000 in Natural Heritage Trust funding announced today.
According to National Land and Water Audit (NLWA) - Australian Water Resources Assessment 2000 - 33% of the Yarra River catchment was affected by excessive nutrients and turbidity, the water quality exceeded safe levels of nitrogen and phosphorus content, and between 70% and 100% of the sustainable water flow was diverted from the river.
Dr Kemp said the Yarra River Restoration Project is an excellent example of how the Howard Government's $2.7 billion Natural Heritage Trust is helping communities deliver real on-ground results in improving their local environment.

 Upwey Urban Fire Brigade - Welcome to the Upwey Fire Station!
Upwey Fire Brigade was established in 1918 and has the distinction of being the oldest of the 15 fire brigades in the Dandenong Ranges.
The Dandenong Ranges are regarded as one of the three most dangerous wildfire zones in the world - arguably behind the southern coast of France and California, however the majority of incidents attended by the brigade reflect the residential/light industrial nature of the urban/rural interface.

Yarra Ranges was initiated in early 2003 by Whittlesea Ulysses members as it was felt there was a large gap in the geographical area between Whittlesea, Shearwaters (Cranbourne) and Melbourne and our branch was formally recognised at the June 2003 Natcom meeting.
We have a passion for riding motorcycles and the Shire of Yarra Ranges contains some of Victoria's best scenery and motorcycle roads.
