		Sir Robert Sibbald, writing at the close of the seventeenth century, says that it was made a distinct shire from Fife about the year 1426 and contained then only the parishes of Kinross, Orwell and Portmoak.

		The landlord of a franchise (be it manor or town) did not get involved in the daily administration of his property and its inhabitants; he appointed officials to undertake duties such as collection of gable rents or the supervision of services due him from his tenants.
		The town community is to some degree a later expression of the folkmoot and is often seen acting as an entity, before the law formally recognized it as corporate entity.
		Towns had their own version of the moot, which had aspects both of court and of council meeting; the various names by which versions of this was known in different towns included burhgemot, portmoot, portmanmoot, assembly, and congregation.

	About the Shire
		The Shire is centred on the township of Coolamon, 41 kilometres from Wagga Wagga and includes a number of smaller towns including Ganmain, Ardlethan, Marrar, Matong and Beckom.
		The main streets and surrounds of the Shire's towns are distinctive and little changed since that time, with original one and two-storey buildings including hotels, stores and emporiums, community halls, churches and schools.
		Although most towns in the Shire originally had railway stations, Coolamon is the only one surviving and it is used regularly for community activities.

		The new town of Wondai was originally known as Bushnell but it was almost immediately renamed Wondai, the aboriginal word for dingo (the Australian native dog, also still to be found in the Shire today).
