Wendy Vaizey's essay -in Literary Potpourri
Shirley is Brontë's 'condition of England' novel, but structurally it falls into two parts: while the first half is an examination of the humanitarian consequences of technological advances, in the second half a love story emerges and social preoccupations dwindle away.
Shirley was at the time of the novel a man's name, and although she is not masculine in appearance, Shirley does appear to represent the masculine principle.
With her portrayal of Shirley as happy, capable and active in comparison to Caroline, Brontë shows the effect of the power that usually lies with men through primogeniture, and demonstrates that such power comes from economic muscle rather than from any innate male superiority.

Jerry Shirley - Biography - AOL Music
Jerry Shirley was one of a relative handful of musicians lucky enough to achieve actual stardom at Immediate Records, as opposed to having been a star before signing to Andrew Oldham's label or breaking through to the press and mass public after moving his career elsewhere.
In 1968, when Shirley was 16, the Little People got what could have been their break when Marriott was able to convince Oldham at Immediate Records, where the Small Faces were the top act on the roster, to record them.
Shirley moved on to work with Tim Renwick in a new band called Little Women, but his contact with Marriott was still to pay dividends.

Songs Of Shirley Bassey > News & Features > Dame Shirley Joins London Walk Of Fame
Shirley was one of the first stars to be presented with their award and was introduced by presenter Chris Tarrant, who described her meteoric rise to fame, referring to her "fabulous voice and equally fabulous frocks" and of course the usual Big Spender clichés.
As Shirley made her exit from the stage Tarrant made another sarcastic quip, fuelling some irresponsible commentators in the days following the event to label Bassey a drunken fool, when is clear that the only fools were those responsible for producing the televisual farce.
Dame Shirley Bassey is among the first sixteen celebrities to get their names emblazoned on Britain's own Hollywood-style walk of fame, which is to be unveiled on September 18.
