Today the biggest challenge for Kenny is the prospect of an 82-acre Southampton campus, which she sees as an opportunity to create the "college of the future." It would focus on sustaining natural resources and using disciplines as far afield as science, economics, philosophy, literature and the arts to illuminate the choices society faces.

Two weeks ago, Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny, president of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, outlined her vision for a SUNY presence on the campus, and expressed optimism that she could make it happen.
Kenny’s idea is to create an ancillary campus to SUNY Stony Brook that would offer an academic program centering on the concept of “ecological sustainability,” with a variety of majors and courses all woven around that unifying theme.
At its inception in 1963, the college’s goal was the establishment of an academic institution with high academic standards; the limited financial support from the university forced the college to rely almost wholly on student tuition for its development, which curtailed achievement of that goal, except in a few cases.
