Shito Ryu is also one of the four major systems of karate still practiced in Japan today.
Ryusho Sakagami was born on Okinawa in 1915 and died in December of 1994.

 Karate Styles
Isshin Ryu ("One Heart Style") came to Shimabuku on January 16, 1954 in a dream where he saw a half sea-snake, half woman deity, Mitsugami (she is still depicted on the Isshin Ryu patch on the uniforms).
This branch of Shorin Ryu was not just taught as a sport or a physical exercise but a means to gather spiritual energy to unite the head, eyes, hands, and feet so that it could be possible for a practitioner to kill with a single technique.
Aside from Goju Ryu, Shorin Ryu is still one of the major styles with a number of branches.

 Shito-ryu Karate
The Shito style uses many short, low stances and the stance known as "shiko-dachi" is common throughout many of the kata.
Mabuni also later studied under Kanryo Higashionna and later named his style of karate the Shito style, taking the first characters of each of his teacher's names.
Master Mabuni combined them to get "Shito" as the name of his style.

Mabuni Kenzo brought Seito Shito Ryu to America in 1993 and through seminars has been exposing karate practitioners to this true form of Shito Ryu, resulting in the formation of the Shito Ryu Karate Do Kai of America.
The style of Karate known as Shito Ryu had its origins on the island of Okinawa.
Many different styles of Shito Ryu are practiced today, but only Seito Shito Ryu is taught as Mabuni Kenwa developed it.

Shito ryu is one of the originals but in my opinion would not be my first choice, that's of course if you have comparable senseis and schools in other arts.
Shito has a little bit of Goju and Shotokan and in some styles some Fukien White Crane.
That's your personal choice, but please remember that the vast majority of Shito Ryu schools aren't as extreme as evidently the ones you've come in contact with.

Shito Ryu Karate-do became more accepted after this time, and Master Mabuni began to teach many students at his home and at many Universities that were forming clubs.
After learning from other masters like Master Aragaki and Master Matsumura and by mixing the teaching of Master Itosu and Master Higaonna, he developed a new system, originally named 'HANKO RYU' (Half-Hard style), but, later changed it to reflect the deep respect he felt towards his two great masters and called his new system Shito-Ryu.

The name Shito-Ryu was developed to honor two of Kenwa Mabuni's karate teachers, Itosu and Higashionna (the first kanji in Itosu sounds like "shi" and the first kanji in Higashionna sounds like "to" while "Ryu" means "style" or "way of doing").

He is Soke Dai (second family head) of Kuniba-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do and Kuniba Ryu Goshin-Do having been personally appointed to that position by Shogo Kuniba, Soke prior to Kuniba Soke's death in July of 1992.
