Surat Shabd Yoga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Sant Mat (Radhasoami) movement of Surat Shabda Yoga was established by Shiv Dayal Singh (1818-1878) in 1861 and named "Radhasoami Satsang" circa 1866.
After his death, six immediate successors carried on Shiv Dayal Singh’s teachings, including Huzur Maharaj Rai Salig Ram of Peepal Mandi, Agra, and Babaji Maharaj Jaimal Singh of Dera Baba Jaimal Singh, Beas.
Sant Kirpal Singh, a Sant Mat guru, stated that "Naam" ("Word") has been described in many traditions through the use of several different terms.

Salig Ram achieved this by emphasizing Shiv Dayal Singh's unique character, arguing in one case for instance that Soamiji had no guru and was the greatest spiritual master of all time.
But after the death of Shiv Dayal Singh in 1878, all of this was changed because there were now multiple successors, each of whom established different ministerial bases.
Indeed, it can be argued that the reason Shiv Dayal Singh's teachings became popular in the first place was due to Salig Ram's persistent efforts to set into type what had only been available to a close coterie of disciples via letters and word of mouth.

In line with Kirpal Singh's contention that the mastership is not merely passed through wills, documents or committees, Darshan Singh revealed that prior to his father's passing he had personally received the light and power through the master's eyes.
In Darshan Singh's case, although his last will indicates that he was well aware of his mortality, his planned trip to America in the summer of 1989 suggests that he was not sure of the exact date of his departure.
Or, to put it more succinctly, the disciples around Darshan Singh did not believe that their guru was going to die, hence they were in "shock." Thus what the sangat was faced with were two different death accounts: Darshan knowing of his death--"clearly"--(what theology demands) and Darshan not knowing of his departure--"hints"--(what practically occurred).

You are right: they [Salig Ram and his devotees] say and affirm that the one and only God of the Universe was incarnated in their guru [Shiv Dayal Singh, the acknowledged founder of Radhasoami], and were such an individual to exist he would certainly be higher than any 'planetary.' But they are idolators, my friend.
The sect was founded in 1861 by Siva Dayal Saheb [Shiva Dayal Singh] (also called Sivdayal), a Hindu banker of Agra, who believed that human beings could perfect their highest capabilities only through repetition of the sabd ('sound'), or nam ('name'), of the Lord.
Subsequently, Shiv Dayal Singh was pleased to reveal the nij mat (original doctrine/path) of Radhasoami Purush (the Absolute Supreme Lord) to his beloved disciple which he had not done previously to anyone.

Sant Kirpal Singh (1894-1974) has included a number of lists in his writings, one of which, while brief, is especially interesting, both because it connects Ouspensky's list with Swami Ji's, and also because it comes much closer to our time than Ouspensky's does:
All Masters, such as Jesus, Mahavira, Buddha, Kabir, and Nanak, etc., of the past, and Ramakrishna, Hazur Baba Sawan Singh, Sadhu Vaswani, etc., of re- cent days, radiated this divine luster [i.e., humility and simplicity] from their personalities.
