 Shiv Kumar Batalvi
Shiv (July 23, 1936 - May 7, 1973), as he's fondly called, was a revolutionary and maverick Punjabi poet.
Shiv's works stand out for unmistakable originality as much as his seeming obsession with pain.
Shiv died at a young age just like Keats to whom he is invariably compared.

The Sunday Tribune - Spectrum - Literature
Shiv Kumar Batalvi was born in village Lohtian (Pakistan) on October 8, 1937.
Batalvi’s core argument in characterising Loona is her claim to her sexuality and its assertion as a badge of her individuality and freedom, irrespective of the distinctions of caste and class, exposing the old social structure based on what some may call male perfidy.
Batalvi posits some polarities such as the modern vs the traditional, pre-destined vs free will, the carnal vs the spiritual, the court vs the forest, modesty vs immodesty etc. These polarities are reinforced by the symbolism of the sun, snake and fire.

Shiv's wife Aruna was a Brahmin from Kir Mangyal in district Gurdaspur.
Shiv was awarded the Sahitya Academy award for this book in 1967, and this epic-like verse play is considered by many of Shiv’s critics as his most significant literary achievement.
In Loonan, Shiv reworked the theme of Puran Bhagat, a mythical folklore of Punjab about the implications of marrying a young girl with an old man. In the traditional story the young wife is depicted as an evil villain in her relationship with the grown-up son of her husband from his first marriage.

Shiv’s critics have generally given a few stereotyped labels to Shiv’s poetry, i.e., poet of Birha and a reincarnation of Keats, ignoring the versatility of his poetry.
Shiv has used this image to develop the symbol of winds that have gone to sleep as if tired of the daylong wailings and the illusion of the warmth of a light fever emitting from the stars.
Shiv’s father, himself a government employee in the Revenue Department, was probably well aware of the advantage of advancing Shiv’s birth date in the school records.

Shiv reworked the theme of Puran Bhagat, a mythical folklore of Punjab about the implications of marrying a young girl with an old man. In the traditional story the young wife is depicted as an evil villain in her relationship with the grown-up son of her husband from his first marriage.
In particular, the profound and perceptive empathy of women's emotions and feelings as victims of social inequity and injustice that Shiv portrayed in Loonan, allows deeper understanding of Shiv's concept of love and gender-relations in his poetry than the stereotype of women as poet's self-centred object of desire.
In Loonan, Shiv presents a remarkably incisive and insightful appreciation of women's sufferings in a patriarchy and exposes its moral values as the tools that force women to sacrifice their individuality to fit in various roles assigned to them.

Shiv Kumar Batalvi, the poet who literally dominated poetic gatherings in his short life, was born in Bara Pind Lohtian, (now in Pakistan).
Shiv continued to let his heart rule his mind, and lived for a while in Qadian before finally moving to Chandigarh in the late 60s.
Shiv used to recite his poems in tarannum, and those who have been fortunate enough to have heard him say that although many great professional singers have rendered Shiv Batalvi’s songs, none of them bettered the poet’s own style of recitation.

Shiv and Me Shiv Kumar is perhaps the most poignant Punjabi poet of this century.
Shiv is original not simply for his metaphors (which are mind-blowing), but the twist he gives to the treatment of the poet in his work.
Shiv is often compared to Keats, and in his biography of Shiv ["Shiv Batalvi: A solitary and passionate singer" 1979, Sterling Publishers, New Delhi LCCN: 79-905007] O. Sharma says as much.

Shiv was born in Bara Pind Lodhian, tehsil Shakargarh, district Narowal (which is now part of Pakistani Punjab) on July 23, 1936.
Although Shiv had become a legend in his lifetime, he remained an anathema for the poets and critics of his generation.
In the aftermath of extraordinary disruption caused by the partition of Punjab, poetry of disillusionment, despair, rage and self-criticism, coloured with left-wing ideology, was in vogue in East Punjab.
