Shiva (Sanskrit: शिव, and written Śiva in the official IAST transliteration) is a form of Ishvara or God in the Vedic scriptures of Hinduism.
A slightly different version is told in the Shiva Purana: in the Śiva Purana, Śiva promises Brahma that an aspect of his, Rudra, will be born and this aspect is identical to Him.
Shiva occupies an exalted, supreme position in Hinduism, making the case that Hinduism is not an Aryan religion, but a synthesis of Aryan, Dravidian and other influences.
