  Introduction to the Himalayas
Shivaliks (Siwaliks, the Outer Himalayas or the Sub-Himalayas)
The Shivaliks rise steeply from the great northern plains of India and Pakistan and run parallel to the main ranges of the Himalayas towards the north, from which they are separated by high mountains and deep valleys.
Lying between the Himadri region in the north and the Shivaliks to the south, the Himachal region forms the middle section of the Himalayan mountain chain.

The Shivaliks are a part of the Himalayan mountain chain that have been neglected for a long time, though the problems and the conservation measures required were identified as early as 1895.

It is a painstaking effort by three scientists, S. Mittal, R.K. Aggarwal and J. Samra, who have compiled and edited the scientific works, research, field surveys and studies and experiences of as many as 86 scientists who have contributed to the publication recounting their experiences gained through experimentation and involvement of the hill people.
The land affected by choes in Hoshiarpur district alone increased from 194 sq km in 1852 to 286 sq km in 1886 and to 2,000 sq km by 1939.

According to a report prepared by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Biodiversity in the Shivalik Ecosystem, industrialisation in and around the Shivaliks is posing a major threat.
The report, jointly funded by the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the state government, says engineering and pharmaceutical firms and paper mills in Ropar and Hoshiarpur districts and stone crushers in Gurdaspur district are posing a serious threat.
The Shivaliks are home to 390 species of birds, 135 species of moths, 74 species of butterflies, 63 species of beetles, 19 species of mammals, 55 species of fish and 27 species of reptiles.
