The Left camp insists that their opposition to Patil's candidature was not based not on his performance as the Union Home Minister or his pliability as it was speculated.
The decision came at the last hour after the UPA camp was left in a quandary with the Left's refusal to accept Shivraj Patil and the Congress' reluctance to field External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Once it was clear Manmohan Singh was to be PM, and it was decided the UPA allies had to be kept out of the big four portfolios, home, defence, finance, and external affairs, although this is bad for coalition politics, well, remained the task of fitting the four best Congressmen for the four top ministries.
The fact that Manmohan wants Patil out rules out Manmohan as Patil’s mystery backer, but at the same time, it is no longer important who this mysterious backer is, because backing Patil for home has been one of the big disasters of the UPA.
