On September 1, 2005 the towns of Ashiro and Nishine and the village of Matsuo from Iwate District merged, forming the city of Hachimantai.
On January 1, 2006 the towns of Ishidoriya and Ohasama (from Hienuki District) and the town of Towa (from Waga District) merged with the city of Hanamaki to become the new city of Hanamaki.

The symposium is part of an on-going collaborative research project, launched in September 1998, that utilizes multimedia and information technologies to gather and publish information on geophysical and environmental conditions in Iwate Prefecture.
In line with the Local Agenda 21 approach, the project s intent is to provide useful environmental information that is relevant to people throughout their entire lives.
To accomplish this goal, the project disseminates information for, and with the help of, students and teachers, and provides "green entrepreneurs" and decision makers with information on a variety of approaches to environmental conservation.

At its Jan. 9 meeting, the Board of Education approved a June 2007 trip by eight students and two chaperones from Daniels Middle School to Toyko and Shiwa Town, Japan.
The students will compare and contrast school and country cultures.
