Topic: Shiz University

  Wicked: the synopsis
Glinda begins by saying that she was very young when she met Elphaba at school (DEAR OLD SHIZ.) The flashback begins, and Elphaba runs into the courtyard at Shiz University, looking flushed and excited and very, very young.
She announces the arrival of her sister, Nessarose ("a perfectly normal color") who is confined to a wheelchair, and is their father's obvious favorite, and heir to the governor's throne.
Later, at the Shiz University park, Galinda is unsucessfully trying to thwart a young munchkinlander named Boq, who has been following her around all day.

It's on the word, "shiz," which is a totally rap-urban-pop-culture-re-do of the word "shit." Now, some of the following re-definitions claim the word is considered "vulgar" -- but I don't see what or where that's based on.
shiz; like shiat biatch, like what is this shit cept what is this shiz.
shiz; the powdery stuff at the bottom of cereal bags, bags of chips, and bags of corn nuts.

Everywhere, energy is needed to keep order in the universe's processes: the orbit of the planets, the rhythm of a human heartbeat, the punctuality of the sunrise.
She came to Shiz University with the stigma of her olive skin.
When she recognized the plight of the animals she dove into the struggle with utter enthusiasm to make the world a better place and rid it of injustices.

So begins a flashback that encompasses almost the rest of the show, as Glinda recalls the circumstances of Elphaba's birth and their time together at Shiz University.
There's a moment early in the Shiz section when Elphaba (played by Idina Menzel with an urgent, simmering self-satisfaction) appears for the first time.
Glinda and all her white friends are on one side of the stage, and Elphaba comes in on the opposite side, in all her green-skinned splendor.

The Book by Gregory Maguire: Wicked on Broadway
Giving her an actual name (she is here named Elphaba after the initials of original Oz writer L. Frank Baum) helps to add sympathy to her plight, and as the reader first encounters the details of her birth and childhood, one can't help but side with her.
The focus next shifts to Elphaba's college days at Shiz University, where she is a misunderstood minority working toward a cause, and where she first encounters Galinda and the rest of her friends, Crope, Tibbett, Fiyero, Boq, and others.
It is at Shiz University where Elphaba begins working toward the cause of animal rights with an Animal (upper-case denotes the ability to speak and other human-like features) teacher named Dr. Dillamond.

The alternating revulsion and attraction that Glinda and Elphaba feel for each other is the evening's most entertaining element, and the show's best scenes are the ones they share at Shiz.
Their intense, evolving rivalry -- expressed most vividly in their vying for the affection of Fiyero (a miscast Norbert Leo Butz) -- is "Wicked's" ace in the hole, the defining struggle that humanizes both women.

Maguire's novel takes a mature, biblical bent as it explores the nature of evil and society's placement of the label "wicked." Holzman's book dumbs this message down a bit; while she may remove the story's philosophical merit, she also sanitizes its adult themes for family audiences (hand-holding replaces steamy sex scenes).
