Shmuel Gonen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shmuel Gonen (né Gorodish; 1930-30 September 1991) was Chief of the Southern Command of the Israel Defense Forces during the Yom Kippur War.
Gonen's response to the Egyptian attack during the Yom Kippur War and his actions during the first days of fighting (culminating in the disaster attack on Hizayon on October 8) was deemed a failure by the army's General Staff, and he was replaced on 10 October by Chaim Bar-Lev.
Gonen believed Dayan to be responsible for his disgrace and would tell reporters that he had considered walking into Dayan's office and shooting him.

Yom Kippur War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On October 8, Shmuel Gonen, commander of the Israeli Southern front—who had only taken the position 3 months before at the retirement of Ariel Sharon—ordered a counterattack by Gabi Amir's brigade against entrenched Egyptian forces at Hizayon, where approaching tanks could be easily destroyed by Saggers fired from the Egyptian ramp.
Because it was considered dangerous to morale to replace the front commander during the middle of a battle, rather than being sacked Gonen was made chief-of-staff to the newly appointed Bar-Lev.
Shmuel Gonen, commander of the Southern front, was recommended by the initial report to be relieved of active duty (Rabinovich, 502).

Gonen, who died several years ago, had entrusted the tapes to two of his wireless operators during the war, Amir Porat and Yitzhak Rubinstein.
Gonen was singled out by the Agranat Inquiry Commission, which was appointed to investigate the war, as one of the officers responsible for the fact that Israel was caught unprepared by the invading Egyptian army.
Gonen reportedly dropped his assassination plan after he saw that Dayan received bad press in connection with the war.

These two adjoining quarters, Kiryat Shmuel and Katamon (or Gonen as it is named in Hebrew), were established during the British Mandate period and developed alongside - and as copies of - the more veteran neighborhoods of Rehavia and Talbieh.
The copy however, was inferior to the original: as Kiryat Shmuel developed, it deviated from the original plan of a Jewish garden suburb, and Katamon could not match the prestige and status of Talbieh as an Arab upper-class neighborhood.
The Kiryat Shmuel Quarter In 1926 a society was founded in Jerusalem with the aim of setting up a new neighborhood to be named after Rabbi Samuel Salant, the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of the city in 1878-1909.

He proposed capturing an Egyptian bridge and crossing the canal even though he had lost two-thirds of an armored division in the first 12 hours of fighting and had no response for the revolutionary tactics being employed by the Egyptian infantry to stop Israel's armored charges dead in their tracks.
Instead, he ordered Gonen to carry out limited attacks against the Egyptian bridgeheads in Sinai, and not to attempt a crossing until the situation became clearer.
Gonen would deviate from this sound policy and engage in a grotesquely botched battle that set Israel back even further.

Their Interim Report, released on 1 April 1974, caused a stir in the country by placing the onus of responsibility on Chief of Staff David Elazar, the Chief of Military Intelligence General Eli Zeira, and the Chief of the Southern Command General Shmuel Gonen.
The Report determined that they failed to prepare the Israel Defense Forces for war and for the operations and intelligence failures in the days and months leading up to the war, which led to disastrous results.
Although she was vindicated by the report, Golda Meir herself resigned one month later in response to public pressure.

Gonen petitioned the High Court of Justice twice, but his petitions were rejected.
In retrospect, it is clear that the commission's most serious methodological mistake derived from the limited mandate it received.

Although the chief of staff in 1973, David Elazar, is usually portrayed as an unfair victim of the events, which he was only in comparison to Meir and Dayan (and even that only for a few weeks, until their coerced resignations), he easily outmaneuvered Dayan and landed the first blow in the duel between them.
The IDF History Department supports Elazar in his dispute with the head of Southern Command in October 1973, Shmuel Gonen-Gorodish, but is unsparing in its criticism of "Dado," the 1978 biography of Elazar by Hanoch Bartov, which has just been reissued in an expanded edition.
The History Department avoids handing out grades to the Agranat Commission report - had it done so, it would have given it quite a high grade - making do with incidental remarks.
