With the passing away of Rabbi Shmuel Ha'Levi the position of the Rabbi of the Minsk District was abolished, and the communities, including the community of Rakov, became independent, with their own independent rabbi and head of rabbinical court, without connections to Minsk.
Shmuel was considered as one of the most exalted rabbis in his generation, the generation of the GR"A [the Vilna Gaon], and the exalted rabbi R. Hayim of Volozhin spoke very highly of him.
When R. Shmuel was asked as to the validity of these marriages, he responded in the affirmative, and cited several places in the Talmud as the basis for the ruling.

Tough Nut for Proof Procedures   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Winograd claimed that his proof was non-creative, because it didn't use an extraneous idea like the colors of the squares.
Winograd (orally in the 1960s?) claimed that his proof was non-creative on the grounds that no new entity like the colors of the squares was introduced.
Anyway Winograd's proof doesn't seem to be as uncreative as Minsky's or one of Stefanyuk's.

Shmuel Winograd: I'd like to agree very much with what Jim just said, especially the second example, and to tell him, as he probably knows, there are several papers by Chandra in which he attempted to use complexity techniques to look at computation exactly from the point of view of the movement of data.

Surely Winograd's proof is creative, but we can ask whether there is one creative idea in it or several.
However, this argument is at a meta-level to the Minsky and Stefanuk proofs and therefore can't claim to be non-creative.
In fact, the Winograd, Minsky and Stefanuk proofs are all creative, and we will try to identify the creativity involved and give a concise expression of the ideas.

I believe that the current record stands at O(n^2.376), thanks to Don Coppersmith and Shmuel Winograd.
Here is a Web page that discusses these methods: Fast Parallel Matrix Multiplication - Strategies for Practical Hybrid Algorithms - Erik Ehrling http://www.f.kth.se/~f95-eeh/exjobb/background.html These methods exploit the close relation between matrix inversion and matrix multiplication (which is also an O(n^3) task at first glance).

 Ray Miller
Ray Miller, who retired from our department in 2002, is truly one of the pioneers of the field of computer science.
He has had three successful careers – the first at IBM, where he helped build one of the world’s foremost computer science research programs and worked with many of the other leading theoretical computer scientists of his generation – people like Dick Karp, Shmuel Winograd and Nick Pippinger.
Ray then had a second career at Georgia Tech, where he built their computer science program into one of the best in the nation and made significant contributions to network theory and computer science education.

"When Shmuel talks," says SIAM executive director James Crowley, "everyone listens." In his years on the board, he was "usually right on the mark" with his comments in widely ranging areas, from investment strategies to politics in Washington.

At this point a mathematical explanation of the solution method developed by the inventor will be set forth in considerable detail, it being understood that the present invention is imbedded in the system architecture for performing the improved Fourier Transform and not in the mathematical solution per se.
For an even more detailed explanation of the mathematics of the solution, reference may be made to an article by Harvey F. Silverman entitled, "An Introduction to Programming the Winograd Fourier Transform Algorithm (WFTA)", published in the IEEE Transactions on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, Volume ASSP-25, No. 2, April 1977.
A very brief description of the mathematical algorithm is presented in an article by the present inventor, entitled "On Computing the Discrete Fourier Transform", published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Volume 73, No. 4, pages 1005 and 1006, April 1976.
