The movie is irrevocably stuck in the present, and it mourns that it can’t better examine what’s happened from that vantage point.
Shoah is definitely a milestone in the history of the documentary film, but a lot of the material it contains has been dramatized or regurgitated in lesser nonfiction and fiction films.
Shoah as a historical document, then it is all worthwhile, but if you see it primarily as a work of cinema, it might be less justified, since it repeats itself stylistically and hammers the same point home consistently.

Shoah (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shoah is a nine-hour film completed by Claude Lanzmann in 1985 about the Holocaust (or Shoah).
Although loosely structured, the film is concerned mainly with four topics: Chełmno, where gas was first used to exterminate Jews in vans; the death camps of Treblinka and Auschwitz-Birkenau; and the Warsaw ghetto, with testimonies from survivors, witnesses, and perpetrators.
Though the film has generally been highly praised, some Poles have criticized Lanzmann claiming he was selective in his use of Polish subjects, that he mistranslated some dialogue, and that he edited the film to create the impression that Poles willingly co-operated with the Nazis, cutting out anything which contradicted this view.

Like many people who have seen SHOAH I was interested in it primarily because of the degree of praise that this film has received; some critics have called it one of the most important films ever made.
But unlike those documentaries, SHOAH seems less about the Holocaust than it is about people, whether they were the commanders who intimidated the Jews, individuals who had small farms or houses near the concentration camps or even the victims themselves.
To be fair, there are long stretches in SHOAH that are less than riveting, and moments when you question the ethics and purposes of the filmmaker.

The fact that the Shoah took place in Europe, that is, in countries of long-standing Christian civilization, raises the question of the relation between the Nazi persecution and the attitudes down the centuries of Christians toward the Jews.
