The protection of riparian areas within the upper Shoalhaven and upper Deua catchments has been identified as an important issue for improved water quality from the catchment along with reducing the effects of streambank erosion.
Landcare groups in the Upper Shoalhaven have been undertaking projects in riparian rehabilitation and restoration for a number of years.
By involving landholders in the testing of their own soils for acidity, the project aims to raise awareness of acidity and establish a greater understanding of the nature of acidity in the catchment.

Shoalhaven Heads is a coastal tourist resort and retirement centre at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach which offers ideal fishing, boating, camping and swimming conditions and facilities.
In 1797 the area was crossed by the survivors of the wreck of the Sydney Cove and then by explorer George Bass who, investigating their reports, followed Seven Mile Beach, crossed the shoals at the entrance to the Shoalhaven River and noted the fertile river flats.
Meehan and Hume followed the Shoalhaven upriver while Throsby, with the help of Aboriginal guides, explored Kangaroo Valley down to the Shoalhaven then crossed it and journeyed on to Jervis Bay.
