Shochet failed to establish "good moral character beyond a preponderance of the evidence," as required by Rule XIII of the Rules Governing Admission to the Bar, and denied his application on that basis.
Shochet was allowed to take the July 1996 bar examination subject to a continuing character and fitness investigation in the event that he passed the examination, which he did.

Shechita - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The animal must be killed with respect by a shochet who has in mind the life of the animal as he draws the knife across its neck.
Pressing is accomplished when the ritual slaughterer, called a Shochet, pushes the knife into the animals throat, chops rather than slices, or positions the animal improperly so that either its head presses down on the blade as it expires or the shochet must push the knife into the throat against the force of gravity.
After the slaughter, the shochet must check the knife again in the same way to be certain the first inspection was properly done, and to ensure the blade was not damaged during shechita.

Perhaps Gedalia sensed that Shimmon the Shochet's pen was not the safest place for a goat just before Passover, so he allowed Yonah to drag him off without any protest.
Of course, the shochet paid him a nominal amount and put him up in the little shed next to the pen.

Kosher Slaughterhouse - Go Vegan Texas! - KPFT Pacifica 90.1 FM
Immediately after the shochet, or ritual slaughterer, has slit the throat, another worker tears open each steer's neck with a hook and pulls out the trachea and esophagus.
In most kosher plants, animals are tightly penned while their throats are slashed, and the organs are not torn; tearing by the shochet is forbidden under Jewish law.
Because the throat-tearing happens after the shochet's cut, he said, it does not render the animal nonkosher.

For a quality shechita to be successful it is imperative to have a staff of shochtim and mashgichim who are true yirei shomayim and experts in their field.

OK Kosher Certification — GLATT: It’s the Shechita that Counts
When slaughtering animals, in addition to properly slaughtering the animal, the shochet inspects the lungs of the animal to make sure it has no adhesions or other blemishes which according to Jewish law may be non-kosher.
A shochet does not inspect the lungs of a chicken for adhesions as he does cattle.
One does however need a shochet for chickens as well; and the qualifications of a shochet for chickens are the same as the qualifications of a shochet for meat.

Later that same day, when the Shochet Hazzan came over to Rabbi Moshe Aharon to pass a test, the Rabbi sent his servant to get ten men from the congregation - men who had their say, but had little or no knowledge of Ivrit (holy Hebrew language) or halacha.
These ten men were quite honored by the invitation knowing that usually for matters of electing a Shochet or Hazzan, the most respectable people of the town were called for - erudites, rabbis, shochtim and the like, and certainly not simple men from the congregation who were far from being erudites.
As the Rabbi was utterly scrupulous, he was afraid that while slaughtering the animals, the Shochet might make an unsteady movement with the crippled hand and then the whole congregation might eat, G'd forbid, unkosher meat.
