		It is set in feudal Japan somewhere around the year 1600 and gives a highly fictionalized account of the rise of Tokugawa Ieyasu to the Shogunate, seen through the eyes of an English sailor whose fictional heroics are loosely based on William Adams' exploits.
		In parallel with this plot, the novel also details the power struggle between Toranaga and Ishido (two great daimyos or feudal lords), and the political manoeuvring of the Christians, particularly the Jesuits.

		I figured that, since traditional fantasy is more or less like historical fiction based in Europe in the middle ages, this might have a similar flavor, based in Japan instead.
		In a lot of ways, Shogun does remind me of fantasy - the epic scope, the adventure and swashbuckling, the fish-out-of-water/ ordinary-joe that becomes important in a political struggle - but for reasons I can't explain it never felt like a fantasy novel.
		Whatever the reason, this reads as both an epic tale and a historical novel that looks at middle-ages japan and the beginning of western influences on their culture, especially the catholic church.

		This is a novel with alot of depth, detail, and tons of characters to keep track of, but it's thoroughly impressive and a worthwhile read.
		So much has already been said about this novel, so I won't go into detail except to add that I was impressed by the display of female power in the medieval Japanese court, whether real or imagined by the author.
