Topic: Shogun (game)

  Shogun | BoardGameGeek
Shogun is based on the Wallenstein game system.
The game is set in the Sengoku period (approx 1467-1573) which ends with the inception of the well-known Tokugawa Shogunate.
The game is an international edition with language-independent components and five language-dependent rule booklets.

A board game is any game played on a board (that is, a premarked surface) with counters or pieces that are moved across the board.
The game is set in 16th century Japan, a century that saw almost constant warfare as different clans fought each other to hold or expand their territory.
The game represents these armies with a minimal number of figure poses, though these cover the basics and of course they are perfectly sufficient for the game play.

Shogun (game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shogun (later renamed Samurai Swords in 1995) was a board game released in 1986 by game maker Milton Bradley as part of their Gamemaster series.
Some interesting features include the orchestration of armies in battle, the emphasis on generals (who gain levels, much like roleplaying game characters), and the unpredictable element of ronin placement.
The trays for units are designed to resemble Japanese fortresses, and each player receives a samurai sword (the purpose of which is to display the order in which players take their turns).

The game itself is very enjoyable, but the figures are the focus here as they are true 1/72 scale miniatures, compatible with the sets of Mongols, Samurai and others produced by the likes of Zvezda.

Shogun: Total War - from CDAccess.com
Shogun meets and exceeds expectations, from the finely constructed scene-setting movie for the campaign, which combines in-game, rendered cut-scenes with 500-year-old Japanese illustrations, to the excellently balanced strategy game combining resource management with intrigue, conquest and 3D battles."
"Shogun is a multi-layered game that is truly epic in proportions.
Shogun not only provides an excellent mix of gaming genres for the historical wargamer, turn-based strategist, and 3D-action buff, but it's also an extremely stable game.

 Shogun
That can be a lot of fun, but the meat of Shogun is clearly the campaign game, which does an excellent job of combining a 2D turn-based strategic game--in which you plan, build, and conduct strategic moves--with a beautiful 3D realtime tactical game in which you fight out your battles.
I’ve had the game crash to the desktop a couple of times, especially when a cinematic is playing, and you have to swap disks to play the campaign game.
The custom games can be fun, but are poor substitutes for a good scenario editor, and the historical game only offers six scenarios and doesn’t include Sekigahara, which is like not including Waterloo in a game on the Napoleonic Wars.

With Shogun: Total War and Medieval: Total War, the folks at Creative Assembly have amassed an impressive record for making strategy games that let you conquer whole regions of the historic world.

The game is set in 16th Centaury Japan and you are the leader of one of japans clans, and it is your job to unite Japan under a single empire.
Now unlike games like Civilisation, where when you move your unit over their unit a dust could appears, you hear a groaning noise and whoever wins is left there, with Shogun the game turns into a Real Time Strategy war.
One main bug in the game is you may have killed most of the enemy's army, but the damn archers never go away, they will run but then stop and start shooting at you, as soon as you get close they run again and this continues, they're impossible to kill.

Shogun: Total War - The Mongol Invasion
The main part of the game was turn based until it came to a battle and it then it switched to 3D real time strategy.
The original Shogun game was pretty poor on this graphics card and the scrolling was very choppy so obviously something here has been improved also.
Perhaps the best alteration that has been made in the game, as far as I am concerned anyway, is that if you decide to use the 'automatically resolve a conflict' you don't always lose.

Shogun has all the aspects of real-life relationships, and you can’t be too careful with whom to place your trust.
With a good enough processor you will be able to see the dust rising from the wake of your army, screams and shouts will arise from the furious roar of battle, and, depending on the time of year you fight, the field may be covered in snow or soaked with a heavy rainfall.

RTS games have been getting a bad rap for being dependant on The Rush for the last while, but with games like Homeworld and now Shogun: Total War it looks like this is starting to change.

Gaming of any kind was relegated to the wee hours of the morning and usually consisted of a computer opponent or something on the internet.

Over the past 30+ years of gaming (and no, my son is not correct, I did not play cards with Abe Lincoln), I have witnessed repeated instances of the introduction of a new game followed quickly by a plethora of knock-offs that glutted the market and just as quickly relegated to rummage sale status.

Shogun: Total War, the new strategy game from Electronic Arts, I'm stuck with a squad of unworthy samurai archers -- men with no honor.
Shogun's designers have imbued every aspect of the game interface with the sensibility of ancient Japan, arguably the most aesthetically elegant in world history.
This unity of mise-en-scne contrasts starkly with most historically based RTS games, such as Microsoft's Age of Empires, in which the "history" mostly seems like costume and props; a kind of grade school diorama overlay imposed on a genre first created in Peter Molyneux's Powermonger, and then expanded in Sid Meier's Civilization and Blizzard's Warcraft.

Set in 1530, Shogun takes place in the middle of the Sengoku period, which literally translates to "The Country at War." As one might guess, this was an extremely tumultuous and violent time, as a great battle for supremacy raged within the very heart of Japan.
This is where the game begins, leaving you as a daimyo who, with enough wits, strategic planning and military know-how, will one day claim the lofty title of shogun.
While you may opt to jump straight into a historical or multiplayer battle, the Campaign is probably the mode in which players will spend the bulk of their time.

Shogun is mostly a 2D game; the decisions that cause conflict, build castles, assign ninja and betray alliances all take place in a two-dimensional game that mimics a board game.
Another great feature of Shogun is that it is recreated in the 100% authentic Feudal Japan and all the names, provinces, castles, generals etc. are all true, and this gives the game a stong historical content.
Shogun is a very complicated game and if I would immerge myself into detail I could write far more than a thousand words.

Combining the feel of Sierra's Lord games and its combination of turn-based and real-time strategy elements with the 3D unit battles of a game like Myth, Shogun has cut a niche for itself in a populated (some might say overly populated) strategy game field.
Since this is probably the best part of the game for most players, it is not necessarily a complaint to note that the battles are the focus.
Graphics don't make a game, but when they are outdated enough to cause a distraction, you know it is a time for an upgrade.

A faithful adaptation of James Clavell's hit novel of the same name, Shogun casts you in the role of Blackthorne, an English navigator hoping to fine fortune in the 19th century Japan, only to find that he must earn it the hard way by winning acceptance and respect from wary Japanese.
Shogun captures the novel's plot and atmosphere almost perfectly, with excellent writing, well-paced plot development, and great Japanese-art graphics.
Although the game would appeal more to Infocom veterans, novices should not be discouraged to try this one out, as the built-in on-line hints are excellent.
