Shogun (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is set in feudal Japan somewhere around the year 1600 and gives a highly fictionalized account of the rise of Tokugawa Ieyasu to the Shogunate, seen through the eyes of an English sailor whose fictional heroics are loosely based on William Adams' exploits.
In parallel with this plot, the novel also details the power struggle between Toranaga and Ishido (two great daimyos or feudal lords), and the political manoeuvring of the Christians, particularly the Jesuits.

The so-called transitional shoguns, of 1568–1598, did not receive the title of sei-i taishōgun from the emperor and did not establish shogunates, but did, for a period, hold power over the emperor and most of Japan.
The term bakufu originally meant the dwelling and household of a shogun, but in time it came to be generally used for the system of government of a feudal military dictatorship, exercised by the shogun, and this is the meaning that has been adopted into English through the term "shogunate."
Three primary shogunates were each centered around a family which seized power and received the title of shogun during that regime.

Based on James Clavell's novel, "Shogun" tells the story of the adaptation to Japanese society and culture of a ship's pilot, an Englishman named John Blackthorne (played by Richard Chamberlain), whose Dutch warship goes aground on the Japanese coast in the year 1600.
As is explained in "The Making of 'Shogun,'" a lengthy and informative documentary included in the boxed set, in which all of the surviving principal cast and crew members are interviewed, writer Bercovici opted to adapt Clavell's novel so that it is told through the eyes of Blackthorne.
Before watching "Shogun" again on DVD, what I most remembered from its original broadcast was the touching relationship between Blackthorne and Mariko, their care for each other and the bravery they show in defending each other.

"Shogun" masterfully brings Clavell's novel to life, and is the story of John Blackthorne, who washes up on the shores of Japan, only to find himself thrust not only into a culture that is completely alien to him, but a feudal war as well.
A wide array of focuses mesh together wonderfully in the film, from the battle to be Shogun between Toranaga and rival Lord Ishido, to the developing bond between Blackthorne and Mariko who has been assigned to teach him the language and necessary customs, to Blackthorne's eventual acceptance into the realm he's stumbled upon.

I figured that, since traditional fantasy is more or less like historical fiction based in Europe in the middle ages, this might have a similar flavor, based in Japan instead.
In a lot of ways, Shogun does remind me of fantasy - the epic scope, the adventure and swashbuckling, the fish-out-of-water/ ordinary-joe that becomes important in a political struggle - but for reasons I can't explain it never felt like a fantasy novel.
Whatever the reason, this reads as both an epic tale and a historical novel that looks at middle-ages japan and the beginning of western influences on their culture, especially the catholic church.

Presented over the course of 12 hours including television commercials, “Shogun” captured the imagination of American television viewers who set their schedule around the miniseries because this is still a long time before VCRs had become as common in American homes as TVs were in 1980.
The computer generated imagery and effects alone would change how sets and sequences as well as background extras for the vast Samurai armies would be produced and in the process possibly alter the humanity of this epic story.
The presence of Jesuit missionaries and Portuguese traders also provide a threat for Blackthorne, who in spite of the odds slowly assimilates himself into the high levels of Japanese society where a civil war over who will become the military dictator of Japan is eminent.
