Icon of Japanese cinema dies | News | Guardian Unlimited Film
Shohei Imamura, pictured after winning the Palme d'Or in 1997.
Photograph: Koji Sasahara/AP Award-winning Japanese director Shohei Imamura, known for his unsettling portrayals of life at the bottom of his country's rigid social structure, has died of liver cancer.
The Tokyo-born director was hailed as one of the icons of Japan's New Wave movement along with Nagisa Oshima, Seijun Suzuki and Masahiro Shinoda - a group of film-makers who emerged in the late 1950s and early 60s to shake up tradition-bound Japanese cinema.

 Japanese Directors - Shohei Imamura
Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, this masterpiece from Shohei Imamura is a bold, frequently offbeat exploration of crime and punishment, guilt and redemption, and the elusive possibility of salvation through love.
Shohei Imamura again demonstrates his masterful, audacious talent in this feature that is bursting with vitality and humor.
Directed by Japanese auteur Shohei Imamura (The Ballad of Narayama, The Eel), this charmingly bizarre slice of magic realism is an engaging variation on the male mid-life crisis movie.

Japanese New Wave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suzuki had begun his career as a mainstream director of low-budget genre films like Underworld Beauty and Kanto Wanderer for Nikkatsu studios.
Suzuki's stature as an influence upon the New Wave was cemented with two developments: the desire to enliven the formulaic screenplays he was given by Nikkatsu (a deliberately overripe pop-art stylishness introduced in 1963's Youth of the Beast and Kanto Wanderer, both key, transitional films for Suzuki), and his 1968 dismissal from Nikkatsu
Shohei Imamura eventually became one of only four filmmakers to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for multiple films - The Ballad of Narayama (1983), and The Eel, in 1991.

Slant Magazine - DVD Review: Story of a Prostitute
Women (and, more specifically, whores) have often been the bearers of wartime traumas in Suzuki's Japan, and the heroine's seduction of the young soldier at first is just a way to turn her tormentor "to pieces"—at one point literalized on the screen, Narita's image shredded in a remarkable example of Suzuki's disjunctive lyricism.
As her feelings for Mikami grow, however, she becomes determined to pierce through his militarist armor and, in another flight-of-fancy stunner, tries to rouse his rebellion by racing to the adjutant's bed, kimono dropped as the screen becomes drenched in atomized brightness.
A seamless Seijun Suzuki movie is a contradiction of terms, though Criterion's restoration has made the images crisp despite the occasional grain, while the mono soundtrack is acceptable.

Suzuki Katana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original Suzuki Katana was a sports motorcycle produced in the early 1980s at the instigation of Suzuki Deutschland specifically for their market needs, and designed at the instigation of Suzuki Deutschland by an outside design team which the project was farmed out to.
The Katana name was later applied to a range of sports-touring motorcycles in North America (also offered in Europe but without the Katana moniker) see Suzuki GSX Series, and to a line of 49cc/50cc scooters in Europe.
Suzuki produced a 750cc version, visually almost indistinguishable from the 1100cc, and a 1000cc version intended for racing.

The movie, shot in fl and white, tells the story of a couple of survivors and their struggle to stay alive and be part of the new japanese society born after the emperor's surrender.
One could say that BLACK RAIN's rythm is slow but I think it's a courageous choice of Shohei Imamura in order that we feel the fear of these people waiting their whole life for the first signs of the inevitable diseases provoked by radioactivity.
Like Brecht, Shohei Imamura's "Black Rain" refuses to remain silent in the face of the 20th century's great horrors, choosing instead the far riskier route of giving voice to them and of painstakingly documenting the devastating effects radiation has on a community while never once imagining that this message, if received, will be heard.

American film critic and translator Audie Bock is interviewing Shohei Imamura at the offices of Imamura's film school (which has since moved to Shin-Yurigaoka, just outside Tokyo).

Maybe it wasn't the film for those who cling to retroactive mythmaking about its director, but as in the case of ED80,000V, Pistol Opera was a film that stepped beyond narrative to become thoroughly cinematic.
That it was theatrical at the same time only proves Suzuki's accomplishment.

A ballad for the late, great New Wave master
Dead last week at 79, the two-time Palme d'Or winner was one of the last of his slowly dying breed, survived still by Suzuki, Ichikawa, and Oshima.
He may have also been the least categorizable filmmaker of the lot (always a handicap in an auteurist world), careless with genre and frenzied about social critique.
