Originally SHOHO was a submarine tender TSURIGIZAKI but was soon converted into a carrier and completed in December 1940.
While SHOHO was launching aircraft to attack the American carriers, she was attacked by the first strike aircrafts from the USS Lexington but scored no hits.
But in the second strike, she was again attacked by USS Yorktown, she was hit by two bombs on the flying deck and she began to lose speed.

United States Navy search planes located a portion of the Japanese transport force including the aircraft carrier Shoho near Misma Island, On May 7, 1942 at 0755 during the Battle of the Coral Sea was attacked by aircraft from both Yorktown and Lexington, a total of 92 planes.
Shoho was the first Japanese carrier lost during the Pacific war.

According to the Japanese official history the Shoho sailed on 30 April 1942 from Truk with nine Zeros, four Type 96 carrier fighters (Claudes) and six Type 97 VT (Kates).
One Zero ditched before the battle on 7 May. The Claudes were used primarily for ASW patrol.
I looked at the 2 Model Art books on IJN Fighters and IJN Bombers last night and though they had no information on the Shoho's aircraft they indicated that the Zuiho's Claudes and Kates were in metallic finish with a red stripe lengthwise down the entire length of the fuselage.
